The murder was merely a catalyst for Coop to remind him the life he had wasn't shitty at all. And it served it's purpose. He's trying to dip out of the privilege for a second to figure out why he wanted to get there in the first place. The murder victim was an ugly man, and Coop can't say much more for himself. And he is a criminal, but not that kind of criminal. It all makes perfect sense to me if you step back from plot devices to the story of a man finding himself. Like you said, it's not much different than Mad Men in that respect.
All good points! I can see the utility of it in the story (and it worked on that level), but I would have preferred a more streamlined, deeper dive into Coop's existential crisis.
For better or worse this show scared me straight in how things were going in my marriage. I think things may work out for me after some serious self-examination & reconciliation w my wife.
But I have a friend who is currently getting divorced and also in an affluent/class situation that is untenable. Not many shows can scare me but this is nearly unwatchable & painful to see.
I can sympathize with Coop when you feel you don't have anyone but literally you have to trust somebody and not being able to confide w his lawyer was a little too much for me.

I agree the murder was not necessary
