I read the book earlier this year, maybe last year, and realized I remember nothing about it, other than a vague feeling of, "Well, that was okay." So, yeah, not a rousing endorsement from me, either.
Totally. Would you recommend any other novels about a fictional rock band? I have been struggling to find comp titles for the one I am currently writing.
"The Commitments" by Roddy Doyle, absolutely. And only partially about a band but still in that sphere, "A Visit from The Goon Squad" by Jennifer Egan is terrific.
Also, the cleverest thing I have ever said occurred on a Friday night that was actually Saturday morning: "Well, here we are at the bottom of another deep thought." Possibly I was quoting someone smarter and more handsome than myself, but if I was, don't tell me. This is all I have.
I make it a rule never to read anything recommended by Oprah ... and now Reese. Just for shits'n'giggles, I checked out this book on Goodreads. I always check the 1 and 2 star ratings first, and there were plenty for this book. Exempli gratia: "I'm reading and wondering why this book was written at all - it gives absolutely nothing to its readers!?! And the fact that she is incredibly popular just blows me away - I can't explain it..."
For great lyrics, listen to C&W songs. "All my ex's live in Texas, and that's why I hang my hat in Tennessee."
Re #6: Your genius -- we were getting around to that...
Re #8: (Rehab and the Bean). Please inform any judges that you happen to meet how that works. AA too.
And now, let's all turn to Hymnal Number One and sing "Sunday Morning Coming Down".

Thank you for the post. The book has been on my list for a while, but based on what you said, I think I can do without it.
It's a fun read, just not a *good* read, if that makes sense. Thanks for reading!

Thanks so much!

That's why I carry a flask of whiskey with me everywhere I go, so I have at least one more thing to cling to.
I've been thinking that I should take up drinking ... and maybe smoking, too.
Why not? No one here gets out alive, after all.
I rather like "Tusk" too, while admitting it was obviously recorded as a prank.
